Our Purpose

Pastor Ben recently did a 3-week series on our purpose and philosophy of ministry. If you would rather hear this content instead of reading it, check out the Defining Our Call Series.

At KCC, we filter every idea, program, and budget request through our purpose statement. If what we plan doesn’t help us meet our purpose, then we don’t do it.

Our purpose is summed up in the following statement:

KCC exists to glorify God by growing people to be more like Jesus so that they can go and do likewise.

What does this mean?

The first idea is that we exist to glorify God.  We are completely God-centered.  Our world view does not begin with mankind and its needs, but rather it begins with a great and glorious God who deeply, passionately, and infinitely loves us.  We were made by Him to worship Him and reflect His glory.

Secondly, we believe that the reason we are here on earth instead of in heaven with our Creator is that we have work to do.  We are here to accomplish the mission that Jesus gave us before He ascended to heaven.  That mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Making disciples is bigger than making converts.  Making disciples is about growing people and seeing them transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It means that we are here to move people from where they are in relation to God, to a position closer to Him.  Everyone’s existence is defined in relation to God.  The closer we are to Him, or the more we grow to be like Christ, the more of a disciple we become.  The more of a disciple we become, the more we will influence others around us to do the same.  To say it more simply, our purpose is  to grow people so that they can go.

This purpose creates for us 2 primary mandates:

And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind [GROW UP], and your neighbor as yourself [GROW OUT].”  (Luke 10:27 ESV) …brackets added

» GROW UP

We were made in the image of God.  We were made to reflect His glory, but that reflected image has been horribly distorted by sin and brokenness.  The gospel is God’s answer to our image problem.  Our time on this earth is to be spent growing to be more like Christ.  As we are continually transformed to look more like Him, we are transformed to be what we were created to be.

We love Truth.  While we believe that the Bible teaches us the truth, we also believe that the Bible teaches us that the truth is more than a set of teachings and dogmas, it is a person.  The person is Jesus Christ.  It is Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, that transforms us into worshippers.

We want to see every member of KCC grow to be more like Christ.  We want them to discover who they were created to be so that they can become better reflections of His glory: better worshippers.

» GROW OUT

Part of growing up is growing out.

The Bible calls us the “body of Christ”, each individual intricately connected to another vitally, with Jesus as the center and head of it all.  This community is held together by the love of Jesus being expressed through us to each other (I Corinthians 13). This is how a disciple of Jesus lives.  If you love God, you will love each other.

Not only are we to love other Christians like us, but we are to love those that are far from God.  We are all called to be missionaries sent into the culture to transform it from the inside out.

Jesus left us with a big mission. It is the same mission that scattered the early church across the globe, it is the same mission that has propelled the gospel forward through the centuries, and it is a mission that we take very seriously. We are all missionaries doing life together. If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, then you are necessarily in the business of living in Christ-centered community and making disciples.  No one escapes this call.
