A Word About Fasting

If you are not familiar with the concept of prayer and fasting this may seem a little bizarre. What many people do not know is that fasting is a spiritual discipline that is practiced almost from cover to cover in the Bible. There are scriptures throughout the Bible that talk about the importance and impact of fasting.

There are two primary reasons to fast:

  1. Obedience… It’s clear that the Bible tells us to fast. On it’s own, that’s enough for us to take it seriously.
  2. The Benefits… Fasting helps to strip us down and push aside the competing selfish desires in us. It makes it easier to hear the Holy Spirit speak to us. It breaks us out of idolatrous routines and thought patterns. It re-establishes right priorities. It reminds us of our dependance on Jesus for life and blessing.

The common way to approach fasting is to pick an amount of time and go without food for that amount of time. You should drink water while you fast and if you are fasting for a long period of time, consult a doctor first. Also, when you break your fast and eat again don’t make that meal a big one. Be nice to your stomach. Save the Mexican jalapeno and bean burrito for another day…

Who should NOT fast food?

  • Persons who are physically too thin or emaciated.
  • Persons who are prone to anorexia, bulimia, or other behavioral disorders.
  • Those who suffer weakness or anemia.
  • Persons who have tumors, bleeding ulcers, cancer, blood diseases, or who have heart disease.
  • Those who suffer chronic problems with kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, or other important organs.
  • Individuals who take insulin for diabetes, or suffer any other blood sugar problem such as hyperglycemia.
  • Women who are pregnant or nursing.

There are things other than food that you can fast. A common one is entertainment. That would include tv, internet, books, magazines, gaming, music, maybe even your cell phone. You can fast certain kinds of food like sweets. You could have vegetarian fast where you only eat vegetables. Be creative. Ask God. Pray about it. The important thing is that you are depriving your “flesh” of what it wants in obedience to God and to help clear away the idolatry of self to make way for concentrated prayer.

And remember to pray!
